Had it been a singles match at NXT TakeOver: New York, Adam Cole would be the NXT Champion. But with the way the stars aligned over Barclays Center that night, it was Johnny Gargano who seized two falls to win the coveted crown in their 2-out-of-3 Falls classic. At NXT TakeOver: XXV, the two lionhearted Superstars have an opportunity to either correct or solidify history when they return to the squared circle with NXT’s top prize on the line.

The Undisputed ERA leader has often cited his pinfall over Gargano in the first 15 minutes of their bout as the reason he deserves a rematch against the champion. “I pinned him first,” he recently told in an exclusive interview. “I did it by myself and in about 15 minutes.” Acknowledging that the title around his waist puts him squarely in The Undisputed ERA’s crosshairs, Gargano convinced NXT General Manager William Regal to approve a championship match between him and Cole at TakeOver: XXV.

For the NXT Champion, this battle will be all about protecting his reign. For Cole, as told to, it’s about proving why he was “born to be the NXT Champion.” It will be “go big or go home” when these bitter adversaries battle it out in this much-anticipated rematch.

Will it be “wins and championships” once again for Gargano, or will Cole see his golden prophecy realized? Find out at NXT TakeOver: XXV, streaming live Saturday, June 1, on the award-winning WWE Network!

The circumstances may have been unexpected, but the opportunity is available to be seized. A week from this Friday at NXT TakeOver: New York, Johnny Gargano will face Adam Cole to crown the next NXT Champion. Ahead of the high-stakes match, Gargano sat down with to discuss his NXT career, Tommaso Ciampa, his impending matchup with Cole and why it’s a must-win championship match.

WWE.COM: You have the opportunity to win the one title that had eluded you for the duration of your NXT career. How does that feel?

JOHNNY GARGANO: It’s a mix of emotions, honestly. I feel like everything I’ve been through — not just this past year, and not just the past four years for me in NXT, but since I was 8 years old, when I had this crazy dream to become a wrestler — has built to this one moment in Brooklyn.

WWE.COM: You will share that moment in Brooklyn with your opponent, Adam Cole. How do you feel about Cole?

WWE.COM: I have nothing but respect for Adam Cole. I’ve known him for a very long time and he’s one of the best in the world. He not only has my respect, but he also has the fans’ respect, as he should. Cole’s earned that. Everywhere he’s been, he’s been successful, and he’s been a champion. Cole expects to be NXT Champion, and he has expected to be champion since the moment he debuted in the Barclays Center and held the title above his head. Adam Cole always felt like it was a matter of time. I never expected any of this. None of this was ever supposed to happen for me. Our paths here were vastly different, but destiny has brought us together for this match.

WWE.COM: It was Tommaso Ciampa who was forced to vacate the NXT Championship after suffering a neck injury, which subsequently gave you the chance to compete for the title at NXT TakeOver: New York. What are your thoughts on how things went down?

GARGANO: It breaks my heart for a lot of different reasons. Some could say that everything I’ve done for the past year was for the sole purpose of getting another chance at Tommaso Ciampa and that NXT Championship. But I don’t want to beat Tommaso Ciampa at 25 percent … I want him at 100 percent. I’m sure that day will come one way or another, because in my heart I feel like we’re destined to do this forever. The journey may have changed, but the end game remains the same. The end game was always the NXT Championship.

WWE.COM: You’ve had the chance to compete on Raw and SmackDown LIVE recently. Despite experiencing this new career chapter, why is winning the NXT Championship still so important to you?

GARGANO: NXT is my life. Plain and simple. I’ve put my heart and soul into this company, and I truly love it and its fans. I wanted to build something here and my legacy feels incomplete without that NXT Championship. It’s about more than the accolades, though, it’s about what it stands for. I want to go from a guy who was told “no” at his tryout, a guy who was told he wasn’t good enough to be here, to the most decorated champion in the history of the company. I want to show the world that anything’s possible if you never stop fighting.

WWE.COM: Let’s revisit the beginning of your NXT career. How did you feel when you first walked through the doors of NXT four years ago?

GARGANO: Scared. Intimidated. Unsure, but ready. I was hungry. You’d think that after four years, two titles and 12 TakeOvers I’d be satisfied, but I’m not. I’m still that same kid that walked in that door four years ago. That drive, that want, that hunger drives me every day. It’ll carry me to Brooklyn.

WWE.COM: You mentioned earlier that you never expected to be where you are now. What were your goals when you first got to NXT?

GARGANO: Honestly, just to get on the show. [Laughs] I didn’t have a contract for the first year of my time in NXT, and that was very stressful. I had to send an email every few weeks just to see if I was needed for anything at TV. I was still traveling around and doing indies, but NXT was where I ultimately wanted to be so I took every opportunity, whether it was an untelevised match or a Battle Royal, and I fought like it was my last, because honestly, it could have been. I truly feel like the “Johnny Wrestling” chants that filled Full Sail and ultimately the Barclays Center at my first TakeOver helped me get my contract here.

WWE.COM: How are you different, both professionally and personally, from the man who walked through the doors of NXT four years ago?

GARGANO: I’ve grown, both as a wrestler in the ring and as a man outside of it. I believe that everything happens for a reason. For the longest time I was horrified to hear the word “failure,” but I’ve come to realize that we all fail. It’s just a part of life. We all fall. It’s how you rebound that shows the type of person you are. That’s what makes you a champion. Fun nicknames and chants aside, I could never truly be Johnny Champion until I experienced Johnny Failure.

WWE.COM: What can we expect from you at NXT TakeOver: New York?

GARGANO: You can’t call yourself Mr. TakeOver and not deliver something special, right? One thing I’ve learned this past month is you can’t control the future. You can only control the now. Who knows what tomorrow may bring? So, for me and the NXT Championship, it’s now or never. I believe it is my destiny to be NXT Champion. I know it’s not going to be easy. It’s a 2-out-of-3 Falls Match against Adam Cole in a building where I’m 0 for 3. Plus, we all know that when you fight one member of Undisputed ERA, you’re essentially fighting all of Undisputed ERA, so this could essentially be four-on-one. The odds aren’t in my favor. But I’ve been an underdog my whole life – I wouldn’t have it any different!

This has been building for a very long time, and to return to the Barclays Center, which is the site of my very first TakeOver, with the whole world watching during the biggest wrestling weekend of the year, with my friends and family in the crowd, it’s shaping up to be the biggest match of my life. This has the potential to be the biggest night of my life. I’ve been dreaming of this night since I was a kid and the only thing I can guarantee, the only thing I can promise, is I’m going to give everything I have on April 5. I know it’s going to be a crazy atmosphere, but to the people riding with me in the Barclays Center, I won’t let you down.

Adam Cole makes his way to the ring and Goldie is in the ring waiting for him.

Adam says last week he outlasted four of NXT’s best when he pinned Ricochet for the right to go to New York to challenge for the vacant NXT Championship against Johnny Gargano. Cole says he can go on for hours why he will walk out of Barclays Center as the champion, but he wants Johnny Gargano to come to the ring and face him like a man to see what he is in store for when they meet in New York.

Johnny Gargano’s music plays and he makes his way to the ring.

Adam tells everyone to shut up and he says he does not need their support because he knows he can win on his own. Johnny says he loves the Johnny Wrestling chants.

Johnny says Adam had a million reasons why he will win so he wants to hear them from Adam. Johnny says we have made history because Adam Cole is at a loss for words. Johnny asks is it that or is it because they are man to man and you are facing the fight of your life at Takeover. Johnny says his path ends with him winning the championship. Now with Tommaso out, his path goes through you. Johnny will show why they call him Johnny Takeover . . . Bay Bay.

Adam asks Johnny if that is supposed to scare him. Is that supposed to intimidate him. Adam says that Johnny hasn’t been in the winner’s circle when it comes to Takeover. That nickname might be more appropriate if it was Johnny Participation. The fact is that Johnny Participation cannot beat Adam Cole two out of three falls. You cannot beat him in one fall and this is why. Adam says he became the first ever North American champion at Takeover. Adam won the first War Games at Takeover. Adam Cole says he beat down Drew McIntyre and held the title over his head at Takeover. How fitting is it that we return to the Barclays Center for him to reach the pinnacle of his career and beat Johnny for the title in the process. Adam says he has earned all of his success. What has Johnny Takeover done to earn this match?

Johnny asks if Adam is saying that he hasn’t earned this? Johnny says they didn’t roll out the red carpet and be allowed to debut in New York. Johnny says his time started at his tryout in June 2015, when he was told no. Johnny was told he was not good enough to be here. Johnny says he has heard it for 15 years and he fought for a chance and that chance came at the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. He was put in a makeshift tag team against a guy he didn’t know in Tommaso Ciampa. They were unsigned and they were told to prove themselves. We fought for our freaking lives.

When it was said and done, they left with no contract and no promise for the future. A month later, he was invited back. He was asked back again and again. He was asked back because every time, he poured his heart out in the ring. The people chanted Johnny Wrestling. The louder they chanted, the harder he fought for a spot. He was not fighting for himself. He was fighting for everyone who was told no and that their dream would not come true. Johnny says he earned his contract in NXT. He earned his spot on Takeover. He earned the Tag Titles. He earned his career back. He earned the North American Championship. This place is his life.

Johnny says he wasn’t handed a top spot and a group of cronies to fight his battles since day one. Johnny says he would not change a thing about where he came from or the last four years because they showed where he is going and that is the main event of Takeover. He will fight to fulfill his destiny and Johnny Wrestling will finally become NXT Champion.

Adam leaves the ring and he says he thought about everything that Johnny said. It is a Lifetime movie right before his eyes. Adam says you can fight and scratch and claw all you want, but when they leave the Barclays Center, Adam Cole will be the NXT Champion. Here is why.

Bobby Fish, Roderick Strong, and Kyle O’Reilly appear on the stage. Adam says Triple H said the match would be definitive. He says Hunter was wrong because this match will be Undisputed.

Johnny Gargano is sitting on top of the world. So far in 2019, the man once dubbed “Johnny Failure” has fulfilled his promise to focus on “wins and championships,” having defeated Ricochet for the NXT North American Title, and he and NXT Champion Tommaso Ciampa upended Raw Tag Team Champions The Revival in a non-title match.

Yet, if Velveteen Dream has his way, Gargano’s world will crumble apart this Wednesday when Dream challenges the newly coined “Johnny Champion” for the North American crown in Gargano’s first North American Championship defense.

Dream earned the right to vie for any NXT, NXT UK or 205 Live title of his choice by winning the first-ever WWE Worlds Collide Tournament earlier this month. When decision time came around on Feb. 6, he let Gargano know face-to-face that he’s coming for the North American Championship. In announcing his choice, Velveteen Dream also wondered aloud about which Gargano will answer the call: the valiant Johnny Champion or the opportunistic “Johnny Jacka**.”

Regardless of which Gargano rises to the challenge, it’s safe to say this title duel is not to be missed.

North American Champion Johnny Gargano makes his way to the ring.

Garagano says he likes the sound of “Johnny Champion” and it feels so great to be standing here as NXT North American Champion. For years, we have been on this long and winding journey in NXT. Johnny says they deserve it. At Takeover, we were validated when he won this. He says he is your NXT North American Champion and he says Johnny Wrestling is back.

NXT Men’s Champion Tommaso Ciampa makes his way to the stage.

Tommaso says he is not out here to take from Johnny’s moment. He is here to celebrate his moment. At Takeover, you showed the entire world what he already knew. You know how to listen and you followed the champ’s lead. Look at you in the ring with the North American Championship while Ciampa has the NXT Championship. They own the world. This is everything we used to talk about. This is the dream we talked about when we were trying to get into NXT.

The sight of us standing side by side holding gold . . . we showed that this is our moment.

Johnny says no. There is no ‘our’ moment. The only reason he came out at the end of Takeover was to show you face to face that Johnny Gargano will never need Tommaso Ciampa.

Velveteen Dream’s music plays and he makes his way to the stage while Ciampa moves down the ramp.

Dream says this is cute. DIY, champions once again. Let us not forget that tonight is not about your moment or Gollum and his precious Goldie. It is not about Johnny Badass. It is about the man who stole the moment at Takeover just by showing up. Let us not forget that while you were putting the final touches on your fairy tale ending, he was winning the Worlds Collide tournament. Dream says he has earned an NXT Championship opportunity of his choosing and guess who he chooses.

Dream walks up to Ciampa and tells him to back up because he sees the lust in your eyes for the Dream. Do you want to share the spotlight with the Dream again? The Dream is over . . . you. Dream says he does not want Ciampa.

Dream walks into the ring and he says he wants Gargano.

Johnny asks Dream if he wants this. He says since Dream is so preoccupied with himself. While you were busy sitting in the crowd, Johnny was in the ring putting on another match of the year. He was winning the NXT North American Championship. The next night, he represented NXT in front of over 40,000 people in the Royal Rumble match. He is on top of the world and he is feeling a little dangerous. If you want to use your title opportunity on him, do it. Johnny says he wins.

Dream says he wants to know when they are face to face and it is Johnny Gargano versus Velveteen Dream, will it be Johnny Wrestling or Johnny Jackass?

Dream tells Gargano his time is short while Gargano leaves the ring. Gargano looks at Ciampa and Goldie and Ciampa goes to the back.

We go to commercial.
